The Sui Dynasty: Administrative Reshaping and the Birth of "Suzhou"

The Sui Dynasty served as the transition from division to unification, leaving a legacy of institutional and spatial integration.

Official Naming: In 589 AD, after the conquest of the Chen Dynasty, Emperor Wen of Sui renamed Wu Commandery to Suzhou, derived from the nearby Mount Gusu. This name has been preserved for over 1,400 years.

City Relocation: General Yang Su briefly moved the city to the eastern foot of Mount Heng (near present-day Mount Lingyan). However, due to the superior strategic and geographical advantages of the original site (The Great City of Helu), the administrative center returned to its ancient foundations early in the Tang Dynasty.

Political Reorientation: By dismantling the political structure of Jiankang (Nanjing), the Sui government shifted the focus of regional governance toward secondary cities like Suzhou, allowing it to assume the role of the “gateway to Jiangnan.”
