Sui & Tang
Early to Mid-Tang: The Southeast Hub and Prosperity
Under the glory of the High Tang, Suzhou maintained long-term social stability and functioned as a primary administrative core.
Administrative Heart: Suzhou served as the seat of the Jiangnan East Circuit, governing a vast territory including modern Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, and Fujian provinces. It was rightfully regarded as the “First Prefecture of Jiangnan.”
The Canal and the Port: The dredging of the Jiangnan Canal made Suzhou the indispensable transshipment center for the imperial court’s survival. Simultaneously, ports like Huangsipu in Changshu became vital starting points for the Maritime Silk Road. Notably, the monk Jianzhen embarked from here on his successful sixth voyage to Japan.
Social Transformation: The local spirit completed its shift toward “Confucian Elegance.” The implementation of the Imperial Examination system (Keju) encouraged local families to prioritize education, leading to a flourish of both public and private academies.
