Qin & Han Era
Material Culture and the Evolution of Daily Life
Archaeological findings from Han Dynasty tombs in Suzhou reflect a period of substantial wealth accumulation. The evolution of burial practices—from simple earthen pits in the early Western Han to elaborate wooden chamber tombs in the later periods—reveals a sophisticated society. Funerary objects, including ceramic ritual vessels, weaving tools, and distinctively local “stilt-house” (Ganlan) architectural models (granaries and houses), vividly reconstruct the life of the Qin-Han Suzhou people: a prosperous existence centered on “rice for food and fish for soup.”
